Who is Sarcasm-hime?
I’m Canadian, I love tea, and I like to call myself a multifaceted geek; I’m interested in anime, comics, gaming, sci-fi, fantasy, movies, kimono, all sorts of fandoms. I’m always interested in learning new things, and always have too many hobbies! Being able to express myself creatively in everything I do is very important to me.

How was born your passion for the cosplay?
I have always been an artist who loves making things and sewing, and I have always enjoyed dressing up and wearing interesting clothes, but it wasn’t until I attended my first anime convention in 1997 that I realized there was a place where fans could come to dress up in costume and have fun! Of course fantasy and science-fiction conventions have been going for decades; I wish I’d known about them years earlier!

Who has introduced you to the cosplay?
I made costumes for my highschool play, so I already knew I liked making costumes. But then I started watching anime in the early 1990s, and at Anime North 1997 I saw my first fans in costume, and I knew I wanted to try it!

What has been the first cosplay that you have done?
My first real cosplay was Naga from The Slayers, worn at Anime North 1999, although earlier that year I also cosplayed as Queen Amidala from Star Wars, using a kimono I already owned and some found items for the headdress.

Instead what has been the cosplay you liked to do more?

I enjoy making all of my costumes, because for me the fun is the challenge of taking a drawing and bringing it into reality. One of the costumes I enjoyed the most was Mata Hari, as I love to make jewellery and fine details. Sometimes my costumes have been frustrating and difficult to make, such as Frostfaerie from the video game City of Heroes, but the satisfaction of achieving my goal is always worth it. I mostly like to cosplay characters that are more obscure, because I like the challenge of figuring out how to make something. If someone has already cosplayed the character perfectly, I don’t feel the desire to make that costume. I also enjoy costumes with fancy details and often choose the cosplay based on the design even if I don’t know very much about the character, because for me it’s all about the actual costume creation instead of roleplaying the character. There are very few exceptions, such as Hilda from Outlaw Star; she has a simple costume but I cosplayed her because I love her character.

What has been the last cosplay?
My newest costumes are Shikari from the comic book “Legion of Superheroes”, and Nightfall from the comic book “Elfquest”. I wore both of them for the first time at Dragon*Con which is one of the biggest conventions in North America. Shikari is a very little-known character but I always thought she was cool, and I have been a fan of Elfquest since I was a child so I have been wanting to cosplay from that series for a long time.

What cosplay you would like to do in the future?
I have a giant list of costumes I want to make but just not enough time! Whenever I see a design I like, I save it and put it in my ‘future cosplays’ folder. Some of the costumes that I want to do in the next few years include Yuuko from XXXholic (two different costumes), Amethyst from the DC comic book, Ice from the comic book “Kabuki”, Amila from the game Magna Carta, and several original designs of my own.

How do you choose a cosplay?
Designs that catch my eye usually involve interesting details. I don’t usually go for big armour or weapons, although I used to make those in the past. Now I’m more interested in fancy dresses. For some reason a lot of the characters that I like to cosplay are tall and imposing, which is difficult because I’m very short. I’m not usually interested in cosplaying the cute and short characters - I guess subconsciously I want to be tall and scary! ;) Another element to consider is whether I will learn a new skill while making the costume. I always love to learn new things so if I have to teach myself something new in order to make the costume, that is a bonus - it is often difficult but worth the effort!

How long do you put us to create a custom?
It completely depends on the costume. Sometimes it only takes 2 weeks, but the very detailed ones take months. My Princess Leia cloak took 6 months - I took the embroidery with me in a backpack everywhere I went and worked on it whenever I had a chance.

Is there anyone who can help you in preparing the costumes? Do you create the accessories or do you buy them somewhere?
I buy my wigs but usually have to style them myself. Shoes I usually buy at the thrift store and then make boot covers to match the character. I make all the other accessories for my costumes myself, but the one thing I don’t have skill at is mechanical parts and electronics. I have a friend who advises me and helps with those elements.

Have you ever participated in the contest during conventions? Have you ever won any prize?
I have competed in, helped organize, and been a judge at so many masquerades (costume contests) I don’t think I can count anymore! I have won many prizes, mostly for my craftsmanship, including at the World Science Fiction Convention and Costume-Con. I currently compete in the Master division locally and internationally. Most of the time these days I am helping to run and judge the masquerades instead of competing.

What means for you be cosplayer?
I love to create things, and I love to dress up in costume. It’s as simple as that. For some people cosplay is about becoming their favourite character, but that’s not my main interest. I focus more on constructing the costume itself and on doing the best job that I can. I also really enjoy seeing how other people have solved costuming challenges and am always inspired to make new things. I know that because many cosplayers were introduced to costuming through anime conventions, they think it’s only a hobby for young people. But as mentioned above, people have been going to conventions and dressing as characters from sci-fi and fantasy since the 1930s, so there are lots of older costumers who have immense talent and wisdom to share. I plan on costuming until I die!

Do you have a web site?

My website is at http://sarcasm-hime.net. On my cosplay site I have tutorials, advice and helpful information for new cosplayers. In addition to cosplay, I also am an artist, bellydancer and have a business making jewellery and Japanese-style accessories.

What are your projects for the future?
I’m always planning a few years ahead regarding what costumes I want to make, but of course plans change depending on time, money etc. I am focusing a lot on my jewellery and accessory business right now so probably will not be able to make as many costumes per year as I used to. But that’s okay, because I prefer to make one or two really fancy and impressive costumes rather than ten simple costumes.

The dreams in the drawer?
My dream job would be to make costumes for Cirque du Soleil. However making costumes every day as a job might mean I would have no time or energy to make costumes for myself, so maybe it’s best to keep it just as my own hobby.

Sono canadese, amo il thè, e mi piace chiamarmi una geek molto complessa; mi interessano gli anime, i comics, i videogiochi, la fantascienza, il fantasy, i film, i kimono, ogni sorta di fandom. Sono sempre interessata a scoprire nuove cose, e ho sempre troppi hobby! Per me è molto importante essere capace di esprimermi creativamente in tutto quello che faccio.

Quando è iniziata la tua passione per il cosplay?
Sono sempre stata un’artista che ama creare e cucire, e mi è sempre piaciuto indossare abiti interessanti,ma non fu prima della prima convention degli anime a cui partecipai nel 1997 che realizzai che c’era uno posto dove i fans potevano vestirsi in costume e divertirtsi! Certo convention fantasy e di fantascienza ci sono state per decadi; vorrei averlo saputo qualche anno prima!

Chi ti ha introdotto al cosplay?
Ho creato dei costumi per il mio recita al liceo, quindi già sapevo che mi piaceva creare costumi. Ma poi inizia a vedere gli anime agli inizi degli anni ‘90, e alla Anime North 1997 vidi i primi fans in costume, e sapevo che ci volevo provare anch’io!

Qual è stato il primo costume che hai fatto?
Il mio vero primo cosplay fu Naga da The Slayers, portato alla Anime North 1999, sebbene prima quell’anno avevo anche cosplayato la Regina Amidala da Star Wars, usando un kimono che già avevo e alcuni oggetti che avevo trovato per l’acconciatura.

Invece qual è il cosplay che ti è piaciuto fare di più?
Mi è piaciuto fare tutti i costumi che ho fatto, perché per me il divertimento è la sfida di prendere un disegno e portarlo alla realtà. Uno dei costumi che più ho preferito è Mata Hari, perché amo craere gioielli e i dettagli rifiniti. A volte i miei costumi sono frustranti e difficili da creare, come Frostfaerie dal videogioco City of Heroes, ma la soddisfazione di raggingere il mio obiettivo è sempre gratificante. Mi piace fare il cosplay di personaggi che sono oscuri, perchè mi piace il cambiamento di capire come fare le cose. Se qualcuno ha già fatto perfettamente il cosplay di un personaggio, non sento il desiderio di fare quel cosplay. Mi piacciono anche i costumi con dettagli fantastici e spesso scelgo cosplay basati sul design anche se non conosco molto del personaggio, perché per me è tutto sulla creazione del costume attuale invece che nell’impersonare il personaggio. Ci sono alcune eccezioni, come Hilda di Outlaw Star; ha un costune semplice ma ho fatto il suo cosplay perché amo il personaggio.

Qual è stato l’ultimo cosplay?
I miei costumi più recenti sono stati Shikari dal fumetto “Legion of Superheroes”, e Nightfall del fumetto “Elfquest”. Ho indossato entrambi per la prima volta alla Dragon*Con che è una delle convention più grandi del Nord America. Shikari è un personaggio poco conosciuto ma ho sempre pensato che fosse fantastico, e sono una fan di Elfquest da quando ero piccola così era da tanto tempo che aspettavo di fare questo cosplay.

Quale cosplay ti piacerebbe fare in futuro?
Ho una lista gigante di costumi che vorrei fare ma non ho abbastanza tempo! Quando vedo un design che mi piace, lo salvo e lo metto nella mia cartella “cosplay futuri”. Alcuni di questi costumi che voglio fare nei prossimi anni sono Yuuko da XXXholic (due costumi differenti), Amethyst da un fumetto della DC, Ice dal fumetto “Kabuki”, Amila dal gioco Magna Carta, e alcuni cosplay originali creati da me.

Come scegli i tuoi cosplay?
I design che catturano il mio occhio di solito hanno dettagli interessanti. Di solito non scelgo grandi armi o armature, anche se ne ho fatte alcune nel passato. Ora sono più interessata in costumi decorati. Per alcune ragione molti personaggi di cui mi piace fare il cosplay sono alti e imponenti, perché è difficile siccome sono bassa. Non sono interessata generalmente ai cosplay dei personaggi carini e bassi - Penso che subcosciamente voglia essere alta e imponente! ;) Un altro elemento da considerare è se imparerò una nuova abilità facendo il costume. Ho sempre amato imparare cose nuove così se imparo qualcosa di nuovo per creare un costume, questo è un bonus - spesso è difficile ma ripaga lo sforzo!

Quanto tempo ci vuole per creare un costume?
Dipende completamente dal costume. Alcune volte ci voglio solo due settimane, ma per quelli più dettagliati ci vogliono mesi. Il vestito per la Principessa Leila mi ha preso sei mesi - Porto il filo per il ricamo nel mio zaino ovunque vada e ci lavoro quando ne ho l’occasione.

C’è qualcuno che ti aiuta nella creazione dei costumi? Gli accessori te li creai da sola?
Compro le mie ali ma di solito le modello io stessa. Le scarpe generalmente le copro al negozio di seconda mano e poi modifico per farle combaciare con il personaggio. Creo io tutti gli altri accessori dei miei costumi, ma una cosa che non ho l’abilità di creare sono le parti meccaniche ed elettroniche. Ho un amico che mi consiglia e mi aiuta con questi elementi.

Hai mai partecipato ai contest durante le ferie? Hai mai vinto un premio?
Ho partecipato, aiutato ad organizzare, e sono stata giudice di molte masquerades (contest di cosplay). Non credo di poter riuscire a conterle ormai! Ho vinto molti premi, molti per la mia bravura, anche alla World Science Fiction Convention e Costume-Con. Attualmente competo nella divisione Master localmente ed internazionalmente. La maggior parte del tempo in questi giorni sto aiutando più a far svolgere e giudicare le masquerades che a competere.

Che significa per te essere una cosplayers?
Mi piace creare le cose, e adoro vestirmi in costume. E’ semplicemente questo. Per alcune persone il cosplay è diventare il loro personaggio preferito, ma non è il mio principale interesse. Mi focallizzò di più sulla creazione del costume e nel fare il miglior lavoro che possa fare. Mi piace anche veramente vedere come le altre persona risolvono le sfide dei loro costumi e sono sempre ispirata da fare cose nuove. So che dal fatto che molti cosplayers sono stati introdotti al cosplay tramite fiere sugli anime, pensano che questo sia un hobby solo per gente giovane. Ma come ho mensionato prima, la gente è andata alle fiere e si vestiva come i personaggi di fantascienza e fantasy già dagli anni ‘30, per questo ci sono molti vecchi costumisti con un immenso talento e saggezza da condividere. Pianifico di fare costumi finchè morirò!

Quali sono i tuoi progetti per il futuro?
Ho sempre pianificato alcuni anni prima scegliendo quali costumi volevo fare, ma certamente i piani cambiano a seconda del tempo, del denaro ecc… Attualmente mi sto focalizzando molto sul business dei gioielli e degli accessori così probabilmente non sarà possibile fare molti costumi ogni anni come faccio di solito. Ma va bene, perchè preferisco fare uno o due costume fantastici e impressionanti invece che dieci semplici costumi.

I sogni nel cassetto?
Il mio lavoro da sogno sarebbe fare costumi per il Cirque du Soleil. Comunque fare costumi ogni giorno come un lavoro vuol dire che non avrei il tempo per fare i costumi per me, così forse è meglio che lo tenga solo come un mio hobby.
