Chicago — Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus deliver a stunning performance of Verdi’s Messa da Requiem on the newest release by the CSO’s award-winning record label, CSO Resound.

Barbara Frittoli, Olga Borodina, Mario Zeffiri and Ildar Abdrazakov are featured vocal soloists selected by Muti, who leads the collective forces in an energetic and poignant interpretation of Verdi’s masterpiece.

Verdi’s Requiem was recorded live during sold-out concerts at Symphony Center in January 2009, which marked Riccardo Muti’s first performances with the Chicago Symphony as music director designate.

This release—the 12th on the CSO Resound label—coincides with the launch of Maestro Muti as the CSO’s tenth music director.

He officially begins his tenure at the helm of the Orchestra in September with a monthlong residency featuring concerts and events at Symphony Center, in Chicago’s Millennium Park and around the city.

Verdi’s Messa da Requiem is available in hybrid SACD, standard CD and digital download formats.

The download is for sale at iTunes beginning September 21, and discs hit stores in the U.S. and Canada on September 28.

The album is released in Europe and Japan on October 15.

Beginning October 28, the download is available through other digital music services including Amazon, Rhapsody, eMusic and HDtracks.

Born in Naples, Italy, Riccardo Muti first came to the attention of critics and public in 1967, when he won the Guido Cantelli Competition for conductors in Milan. In 1971, Muti was invited by Herbert von Karajan to conduct at the Salzburg Festival; his association with the Vienna Philharmonic and the festival continues today.

Muti has served as principal conductor of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, chief conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra, music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra and music director of the Teatro alla Scala. In 2006, he was appointed artistic director of Salzburg’s Pentecost Festival, and in 2010 he also becomes director of the Rome Opera.

Over the course of his extraordinary career, Riccardo Muti has conducted the most important orchestras in the world, from the Berlin Philharmonic to the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic to the Orchestre National de France.

Maestro Muti made his debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival in July 1973.

His appointment as the CSO’s tenth music director was announced in May 2008, and in September 2010 he assumes the post for a five-year contract.

A musical force in Chicago and around the world, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has been consistently hailed as one of the finest international orchestras since its founding in 1891.

Italian conductor Riccardo Muti, one of the world’s most celebrated maestros, begins his highly anticipated tenure as the tenth music director of the CSO in September 2010; the eminent French composer-conductor Pierre Boulez continues his service as Helen Regenstein Conductor Emeritus.

The Orchestra’s expansive catalog of more than 900 recordings has earned 60 Grammy Awards—more than any other orchestra in the world.

In 2007, in order to significantly broaden the reach of the world-class music making of the Orchestra, the CSO launched its own record label, CSO Resound.

All CSO Resound releases are selected from live recordings of CSO concerts in Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center, documenting and extending a unique concert experience.

Previous CSO Resound releases include Mahler’s First, Second, Third and Sixth symphonies; Poulenc’s Gloria with Jessica Rivera and Ravel’s complete Daphnis et Chloé; Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony; and Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben and Webern’s Im Sommerwind, all conducted by Bernard Haitink; Stravinsky’s complete Pulcinella, Symphony in Three Movements and Four Études, conducted by Pierre Boulez; Traditions and Transformations: Sounds of Silk Road Chicago, with Yo-Yo Ma, Wu Man, the Silk Road Ensemble and conductors Miguel Harth-Bedoya and Alan Gilbert (2008 Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album, Classical); and a download-only recording of Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony under Myung-Whun Chung.

A two-disc CD/DVD set of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4 conducted by Bernard Haitink (2008 Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance), with video of the CSO’s Beyond the Score exploration of the work, was released in August 2008.

CSO Resound is underwritten by a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smykal.
Bank of America is the global sponsor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
