The Metropolitan Opera’s new production and company premiere of John Adams’s Nixon in China will be transmitted live to movie theaters worldwide on Saturday, February 12 at 1:00 pm ET as part of The Met: Live in HD.
John Adams makes his Met debut conducting his most famous opera, and acclaimed director and longtime Adams collaborator Peter Sellars makes his Met debut with this groundbreaking 1987 work, an exploration of the human truths beyond the headlines surrounding President Nixon’s 1972 encounter with Communist China.
Baritone James Maddalena, who originated the role in 1987, stars as Nixon; with Kathleen Kim as Chian Ch’ing, Janis Kelly as Pat Nixon, Robert Brubaker as Mao Tse-tung, Russell Braun as Chou En-lai, and Richard Paul Fink at Henry Kissinger.
