University at Buffalo, State University of New York, seeks a 2008-2009 Post-doctoral Scholar (PS) for its interdisciplinary Institute for European and Mediterranean Archaeology (IEMA). During a 10 month tenure, the PS teaches one graduate seminar, organizes a symposium, and edits a subsequent volume reflecting IEMA’s focus on post-Pleistocene European and Mediterranean anthropological and classical archaeology. Symposium focus is open, but should stress contemporary theory, topics of broad current interest, and be inclusive of the Institute’s broader geographic/temporal foci. The PS receives stipend, benefits, plus individual research funds. Greek and/or Latin Language and Culture Temporary Lecturer position(s) – The Department of Classics at UCLA invites applications for one or two full-time lecturer positions for the academic year 2008-2009. Cotsen Institute of Archaeology
The Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) announces a new 2-year Postdoctoral Fellowship to begin in the Fall Quarter of the 2008-2009 school year. The Fellowship is intended to give promising scholars the opportunity to pursue their own research and at the same time interact with a large and diverse group of faculty, graduate students, and affiliated researchers with a wide range of theoretical and methodological specialties. The Cotsen Institute faculty are primarily from five departments—Anthropology, Art History, Classics, History and Near Eastern Languages and Cultures—with affiliated faculty from a dozen departments on the UCLA campus (http://www.ioa.ucla.edu).
Applicants will be considered from any research area or theoretical orientation within archaeology, including topics beyond those traditionally represented by the five core departments listed above. The successful candidate will be expected to teach one course each Spring Quarter, its subject to be determined on the basis of his or her research interests and departmental needs. Additionally, the candidate will give one lecture each quarter, either to the Institute affiliates or the general public.
The total support package is $38,000 for each academic year (term of residence September 1, 2008 to August 31, 2010) plus medical benefits, access to UCLA campus resources, and a travel allowance for one conference airfare and one research-related airfare each year (up to $1500.00/ year). The Department of Classical Studies at Duke University invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor with Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment. The position begins in Fall 2008, and might be renewable. We seek a broadly trained Classicist well versed in both Latin and Greek languages and literatures, whose specialty is either Latin prose or Republican literature. We encourage applicants with proven ability to teach intermediate and advanced undergraduate courses in Latin prose and verse, literature in translation, and possibly advanced undergraduate Greek. The successful candidate will have a 3/2 teaching load and perhaps the opportunity to teach a graduate course.

THE EVERGREEN STATE COLLEGE – OLYMPIA, WA
The Evergreen State College seeks a faculty member in Classical Studies whose research and teaching focus on one or more of the following fields: literature, history, philosophy, art history and/or archaeology. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in teaching about Greek and Roman cultures within the broader Mediterranean world. We especially encourage applications from scholars whose research and teaching focuses on the relationships between Greece and Rome and the ancient civilizations of Africa and Asia. Candidates must be able to teach Greek or Latin, preferably both. Because we are interested in the ways in which knowledge of the past can illuminate the present, we are also seeking candidates with serious research and teaching interests in themes and questions applicable to 21st century questions of global citizenship, with its historical continuities and cultural variations. Such themes could include the meaning of citizenship and democracy, humanity’s relationship to the natural world, the relationship between the secular and the spiritual, or the problematic features of empire and colonialism. We would very much value in a colleague the ability to engage these questions in a comparative framework and to do so with consideration of modern texts and issues.
Team teaching is fundamental to the work of faculty members at Evergreen. Faculty members on teaching teams have a significant amount of direct contact with students and enjoy a high degree of freedom to determine the subject matter, pace, emphasis, classroom strategies and modes of evaluation in the programs that they teach. Candidates who have background and interests beyond the humanities and have prior experience teaching with faculty from other disciplines are particularly encouraged to apply. We also encourage applicants who have had experience teaching and/or working with students from underrepresented populations, and who prioritize inspiring a diverse range of students to study Classics.

Assistant Professor of Classics and Archaeology.
The Department of Classical and Semitic Languages and Literatures at the George Washington University seeks a classical archaeologist/classicist for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor specializing in the study of the ancient Mediterranean region. Teaching responsibilities: courses in classical archaeology, Greek, Latin, history, and civilizations of the classical world. Preference will be given to a classical archaeologist who can teach Greek and/or Latin at all levels.
Basic Qualifications: PhD in classical archaeology, classics, or related field; demonstrated teaching excellence and potential for strong record of scholarly publication; knowledge of one classical language at the advanced level and of the other at the intermediate or advanced level; experience in archaeological methods and fieldwork in the ancient Mediterranean region.

MOUNT ALLISON UNIVERSITY – SACKVILLE, NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA
The Crake Foundation and the Department of Classics at Mount Allison University are pleased to announce the Crake Doctoral Fellowship in Classics for the academic year 2008-2009.
The Crake Fellowship is non-renewable, open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who at the time of taking up the fellowship have completed all course and residential requirements for the Doctorate in Classics, passed all preliminary examinations and completed the research for the thesis, and who can reasonably be expected to finish the doctorate during the year of the fellowship.
The holder will be asked to teach one course in each of the Fall and Winter terms, give a public lecture, and be in Sackville from September to the end of April.
In 2008-2009 the holder of the Crake Fellowship will receive $24,000 (CDN), with an allowance of up to $3,500 (CDN) to cover moving and other research-associated expenses.

The thesis supervisor should be asked to write concerning the subject of the thesis and the expected date for its final submission. Applicants should also send a statement regarding the progress of their doctoral studies, including their schedule for completion, and a 1-2 page synopsis of their thesis.

University of Konstanz – Konstanz, Germany
Professor for the Archaeology of Ancient Mediterranean Cultures and their Relationship to the Ancient Near East and Egypt
Department of History and Sociology. The position is to be filled from October, 1st, 2008.
The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching the period between the early first millenium B.C. and the sixth century A.D. The candidate’s specialization may lie in the Ancient Near East/Egypt or in classical archaeology. An ability to teach either the Graeco-Roman perception of the Ancient Near East or the near-eastern perception of the Graeco-Roman world is expected. The candidate will teach students taking Education and Bachelor/Master courses in History, as well as students in the inter-disciplinary Bachelor/Master programme “Cultures of Antiquity”. Participation in the Cluster of Excellence 16 “Cultural Foundations for Integration” is also expected.
