Auguri il suo 70° compleanno a Ralph Towner che con la sua chitarra ha saputo (e sa) farci sognare.

Non è un chitarrista di jazz nel senso convenzionale del termine e neanche un chitarrista classico, ma un improvvisatore di grande eloquenza e immaginazione. Ralph Towner è una categoria a parte. Musicalmente nasce come pianista e da questa sua origine trae il pensiero di trasporre il potenziale armonico pianistico sulla chitarra. Le sue fonti d’ispirazione includono la musica brasiliana, la tradizione classica da Bach a Stravinsky e la concezione jazzistica di Bill Evans.

Towner, nativo di Washington, vive attualmente proprio in Italia. Ha registrato per la ECM dischi in duo con Gary Peacock, Gary Burton e John Abercrombie. Towner è apparso molte volte con altre formazioni, come ad esempio con i Weather Report nell’album del 1972 “I Sing the Body Electric”. E’ stato leader di propri gruppi, uno dei componenti degli Oregon, ha lavorato con Keith Jarrrett e Jan Garbarek.

Ha pubblicato un album ambizioso come one-man-band, Blue Sun dove suona: corno francese, cornetta, sintetizzatore, piano e percussioni in aggiunta alla sua chitarra a 12 corde. I suoi album in solo come Diary, Solo Concert, Ana, Anthem e Time Line mostrano forse al meglio le sue capacità di improvvisatore e al tempo stesso di compositore di brani originali.
