James Nesbitt nasce a Coleraine nell’Irlanda del Nord il 15 gennaio 1965.

Ha frequentato la Central School of Speech and Drama (CSSD) di Londra.
Ha una lunga carriera alle spalle iniziata negli anni ‘80 ma la notorietà è arrivata grazie alle parte interpretate in serial come Cold Feet e film come Millions e Mach Point.

Nel novembre 2010 viene annunciato che Nesbitt interpretera il nano Bofur ne Lo Hobbit.
